Is SeneGence a Pyramid Scheme? Kind Of… [MLM Review]

Is SeneGence a Pyramid Scheme Kind Of… [MLM Review]

Let me guess…

Very recently, someone approached and told you about SeneGence’s money-making opportunity whereas you can apparently build an income by selling a vast variety of high-quality beauty products as well as through recruiting a team of people who will do the same.

Since you are an open-minded woman who already uses a bazillion of “beauty-boosting” products, you thought that creating a business around them could turn out to be a pretty interesting and fun idea.

However, thankfully for you, you’re neither stupid nor gullible…

You understood that SeneGence is an MLM company and that this person who told you about it was just trying to recruit you.

And you have heard your fair share of MLM horror stories…

People who lost money and drifted apart from friends and family after joining pyramid schemes posing as legit MLM companies that turned them into disgusting salespeople pitching crappy products/services even to their neighbor’s dog.

And you definitely don’t want to end up like that.

So, you decided to do your research…

Well, this is your lucky day!

In this review, I am going to uncover every single aspect of SeneGence, such as

In addition, I am going to reveal to you a couple of alternative money-making opportunities.

Before I move on to the actual SeneGence International MLM review, I want to reveal to you some statistics about the MLM business model that will probably SHOCK you to your very core.

DON'T bother joining an MLM...

…until you’ve taken a good look at these shocking MLM statistics.

What is SeneGence International About?

SeneGence International is a privately owned American multi-level marketing (MLM) company that operates in the beauty cosmetics industry.

SeneGence’s name is derived from the combination of the words “Senescence” (the process of aging) and “Intelligence” (the capacity to acquire and apply knowledge).

You could say that SeneGence means the knowledge applied to slow down the process of aging!?

The company was launched in 1999 by Joni Rogers-Kante who is still the CEO of the company.

SeneGence Founder and CEO Joni Rogers-Kante
Joni Rogers-Kante

Joni had her first contact with the direct sales and MLM business model when she started working as a distributor for Mary Kay Cosmetics. It is said that she became one of the top distributors of the company pretty quickly.

Eventually, Joni started dreaming about owning her very own cosmetics business that would distribute high-quality products while offering its distributors a compensation plan that she would want for herself.

In 1998, Joni ran into a man who knew a chemist who was working on a long-wear lip color product called “Ultralux”.

Ultralux seemed to be similar to the high-quality product Joni was looking for.

A few months later, Joni met with the chemist, tried the product, loved it, and agreed with the chemist to start doing business together immediately.

Joni started selling Ultralux out of her living room, raised funds, and launched SeneGence one year later.

Ultralux was rebranded as the SeneGence product line LipSense.

Eventually, SeneGence started becoming involved in anti-aging, skincare, and personal care.

Joni is also the author of the book “Million Dollar Lips, A Journey Into the Hearts and Minds of Women in Business”

Other people in SeneGence’s leadership team include:

  • Philippe Guerreau – President
  • Michael Moad – Chief Legal Officer
  • Ben Kante – Chief Strategy Officer
  • Jerome S. Kaiser – Chief Financial Officer, CPA, MS, CFE
  • Alan Rogers Kante – Owner/CXO, Chief Experience Officer
  • Leslie Boyd-Bradley – Vice President of Distributor Development and Sales
  • Kirsten Aguilar – Executive Vice President of Global Marketing and SeneCare
  • Karen Goodman – Executive Vice President of Sales and Distributor Development
  • Charles Miller – Vice President of Manufacturing
  • Brian Manahan – Vice President of Lean Management

According to Wikipedia, SeneGence earned $1.7 million in revenue from product sales in its first year of operation and $3.8 million the following year and had gathered more than 500,000 distributors by the end of 2018.

SeneGence’s mission is to empower women around the world to live life in love and abundance through careers that really work and selling innovative beauty products that really work.

You can find a lot more about SeneGence and its leadership team, products, policies, opportunity, mission, etc on the company’s official website.

SeneGence International
Products & Prices

SeneGence International manufactures and distributes a variety of cosmetics that fall under the 6 following categories:

  • Skincare
  • Anti-aging
  • Makeup
  • Personal care
  • Haircare
  • Perfumes

According to SeneGence, its products

  • Aren’t tested on animals
  • Do not contain animal by-products
  • Contain naturally reoccurring natural ingredients
  • Are formulated with FDA approved ingredients (the products themselves are not approved by the FDA, only their ingredients)
  • Are made in cGMP manufacturing facilities
  • Are manufactured in the United States for stringent quality control
  • Are gluten and GMO-free (most products)
  • LipSense contains no wax & no lead

SeneGence’s flagship, most popular, and first-ever product is the LipSense Liquid Lip Color.

Unlike most conventional lipsticks, SeneGence claims that LipSense is long-lasting, waterproof, does not kiss-off, smear-off, rub-off or budge-off while not drying out your lips.

After watching a few LipSense reviews on YouTube published by people claiming that they were neither working as Distributors for SeneGence nor promoting the product, it seems that LipSense actually delivers all the promised results.

One complaint that came up quite a lot was that LipSense felt more “sticky” than a normal lipstick.

LipSense costs $25 per 0.25 oz.

According to most reviewers, LipSense is worth its money.

The rest of SeneGence’s products could count up to dozens so for obvious reasons I am not going to list every single one of them separately.

You can find out more about SeneGence’s products, their ingredients, and their respective prices right here.

SeneGence's Distributor
Compensation Plan

The majority of MLM companies have so extremely complicated compensation plans that it feels like you need to have a rocket scientist doctorate to understand just their first paragraph.

SeneGence’s compensation plan is no exception…

Nonetheless, in order to make things easier for you,  I’ll try my best to get you up to speed.

So, SeneGence compensates its Members in the following 3 different ways…

  1. Retail Profit
  2. Downline Commission Bonus
  3. Group Sales Volume Bonus
  4. Incentive Trips
  5. SeneCar

1 • Retail Profits

As a Distributor for SeneGence, you are eligible to purchase the company’s products at discounted wholesale prices and then resell them at retail price.

The Retail Profit pays you the difference between the retail price you sold a product and the wholesale price you purchased it.

The amount of the wholesale discount you’ll get is calculated based on the total PV you’ve generated during any given month.

  • 0 – 99.5 PV = 20% discount
  • 100 – 299.5 PV = 30% discount
  • 300 – 749.5 PV = 40% discount
  • 750+ PV = 50% discount

PV (Point Value) = 1/2 per $1 of a product’s retail value

2 • Downline Commission Bonus

The Downline Commission Bonus pays you a percentage of the first 100 PV Distributors in your downline generate during any given month through a uni-level structure and up to 5 Lines (Levels) of distributors deep.

  • 1st Line = Distributors you have personally recruited
  • 2nd Line = Recruits of the Distributors you have personally recruited
  • 3rd Line = Distributors recruited by your 2nd Line of Distributors
  • and so on…

In order to qualify to earn the Downline Commission Bonus through your first 3 Lines, you must have also placed a 100 PV order yourself during the same calendar month.

If you do so, then you’ll earn

  • 10% of the PV of your 1st Line
  • 20% of the PV of your 2nd Line
  • 30% of the PV of your 3rd Line

In order to earn the Downline Commission Bonus through your 4th Line, you’ll have to meet the following qualifications:

  • Place a 200 PV order yourself during the same calendar month
  • Have at least 5 Distributors on your 1st Line who have placed a 100+ PV order each
  • Generate at least 10.000 PV on your first 3 Lines

The payout of the 4th Line is 5% of the PV it generated.

In order to earn the Downline Commission Bonus through your 5th and final Line, you’ll have to meet the following qualifications:

  • Place a 200 PV order yourself during the same calendar month
  • Have at least 5 Distributors on your 1st Line who have placed a 100+ PV order each
  • Generate at least 15.000 PV on your first 3 Lines

The payout of the 5th Line is 5% of the PV it generated.

Please note that the Downline Commission Bonus pays you a percentage of the first 100 PV Distributors in your downline generate each month.

Any additional PV generated are paid through the Group Sales Volume Bonus that I discuss right below.

3 • Group Sales Volume Bonus

The Group Sales Volume Bonus pays you a percentage of the total PV after the first 100 PV Distributors in your downline generate during any given month through a uni-level structure and up to 5 Lines (Levels) of distributors deep.

Below you can find the qualifications you’ll have to meet to earn the Group Sales Volume Bonus through each Line:

1st Line – 10% of PV:

  • Place a 100 PV order yourself during a calendar month

2nd Line – 6% of PV:

  • Place a 300 PV order yourself during a calendar month
  • Have at least 5 Distributors on your 1st Line who have placed a 300+ PV order each
  • Have at least 5 Distributors on your 2nd Line who have placed a 300+ PV order each

3rd Line – 4% of PV:

  • Place a 300 PV order yourself during a calendar month
  • Have at least 5 Distributors on your 1st Line who have placed a 300+ PV order each
  • Have at least 5 Distributors on your 2nd Line who have placed a 300+ PV order each
  • Have at least 5 Distributors on your 3rd Line who have placed a 300+ PV order each

4th Line – 3% of PV:

  • Place a 300 PV order yourself during a calendar month
  • Have at least 5 Distributors on your 1st Line who have placed a 300+ PV order each
  • Have at least 5 Distributors on your 2nd Line who have placed a 300+ PV order each
  • Have at least 5 Distributors on your 3rd Line who have placed a 300+ PV order each
  • Have at least 5 Distributors on your 4th Line who have placed a 300+ PV order each

5th Line – 2% of PV:

  • Place a 300 PV order yourself during a calendar month
  • Have at least 5 Distributors on your 1st Line who have placed a 300+ PV order each
  • Have at least 5 Distributors on your 2nd Line who have placed a 300+ PV order each
  • Have at least 5 Distributors on your 3rd Line who have placed a 300+ PV order each
  • Have at least 5 Distributors on your 4th Line who have placed a 300+ PV order each
  • Have at least 5 Distributors on your 5th Line who have placed a 300+ PV order each

4 • Incentive Trips

SeneGence holds promotions, contests and conferences all around the world every single year for its Distributors.

The qualifications you have to meet to participate in any of those trips are published each year on the company’s official website.

5 • SeneCar

SeneGence reimburses you part or all of the cost of your lease payments for a new car (depending on your performance and the car you choose).

For more information about the SeneCar program and the qualifications you’ll need to meet in order to qualify for it, click here.

You can study SeneGence’s full compensation plan for yourself right here.

The short video right below also sums up the company’s compensation plan pretty neatly so you might want to give it a watch if you still have any gaps.

Please note that SeneGence’s compensation plan might undergo changes from time to time so by the time you read this review, some of the info, the commission rates, the rank qualifications, etc that I shared with you right above might not be that accurate.

If you still have questions about it, you can contact the company’s support team using the contact information on this page.

Is SeneGence International a Pyramid Scheme?

Most of the time it’s very hard to distinguish between a legit MLM company and a pyramid scheme.

Make sure to watch the video below to discover how to spot and avoid pyramid schemes in general.

The main difference between a legit MLM and a pyramid scheme is that your income potential with a legit MLM is mostly based on selling the company’s actual products or services to retail customers while your income potential with a pyramid scheme is mostly or solely based on recruiting other people into the scheme.

Not all MLMs are legitimate. If the money you make through an MLM is based on your sales to the public, it may be a legitimate one. If the money you make is based on the number of people you recruit and your sales to them, it’s not legit. It’s a pyramid scheme. Pyramid schemes are illegal, and the vast majority of their participants lose money. – Federal Trade Commission

Since SeneGence offers you the option to earn money by selling its products to retail customers, technically, SeneGence it’s not a pyramid scheme.

On the other hand, the company’s compensation plan undeniably displays some very concerning pyramid-like characteristics.

First of all, in order to qualify for the Downline Commission Bonus, Distributors have to personally purchase 100 PV (~$200)  worth of products monthly. And that’s if they want to qualify for commissions only on their first 3 Lines.

If they want to qualify for commissions through Lines 4 & 5, they have to personally purchase 200 PV (~$400) worth of products monthly.

Same goes with the Group Sales Volume Bonus but in order to earn commissions on Lines 2 to 5, Distributors have to personally purchase 300 PV (~$600) worth of products monthly.

All the PV Distributors generate through their monthly qualifying purchases generate commissions for their respective Sponsor and upline.

This instance is something that you would come across in a pyramid scheme.

In addition, this is clearly what they call “Pay to Play”.

Pay to play basically means that the more money you “invest” in the company the higher your income potential could be which is exactly the case with SeneGence.

According to FTC, Pay to Play is one of the five defining characteristics of pyramid schemes.

Furthermore, an article published in December 2017 by The Outline claimed that SeneGence’s business model and the payment structure for independent distributors encouraged “front-loading” (when distributors buy potentially non-refundable large volumes of inventory either in preparedness for customer orders, to combat product shortages, or meet certain qualifications).

This is yet another indication that the company could be operating as an illegal pyramid scheme.

Having said all that, you absolutely have the option to just focus your efforts on selling SeneGence’s products to retail customers without even bothering with recruiting a team and qualifying for the company’s team bonuses.

This will definitely result in you saving hundreds of dollars that you would otherwise spend on monthly qualifications but consider this…

SeneGence employs the MLM business model for a reason – to help people maximize their income potential by paying them out commissions through the sales of Distributors that exist multiple levels below them.

The vast majority of people who fully utilize an MLM’s compensation plan, retail sales in conjunction with recruiting, end up either not earning or losing money.

How much money do you think you could earn just through selling SeneGence’s products in retail?

Also, even if YOU just focus on the retail aspect of SeneGence won’t make its pyramid-like side magically disappear.

And being involved in a pyramid scheme in any way is always an extremely risky move which will most likely end up in disaster sooner or later.

SeneGence Pros

1 • Free Replicated Website

Once you join SeneGence as a Distributor, the company offers you the option to set up a free replicated website through your personal back office.

When people visit your replicated website and purchase SeneGence’s products through it, a percentage of what they pay will land in your pocket.

In addition, if someone signs up as a Distributor for SeneGence through your replicated website you automatically become their sponsor, and they become part of your downline.

If marketed the right way, this replicated website could help you maximize your retail sales, recruits and thus your income.

If your business is not on the internet, then your business will be out of business – Bill Gates

2 • Established Company

SeneGence has been in business for 21 years now which is exceptional considering that most MLM companies burn to the ground before they even hit the 5-year mark…

The downside of SeneGence being so established is that you might have great difficulty finding potential customers and/or recruits due to the sheer amount of already existing Distributors that will probably already exist out there.

3 • Money-Back Guarantee

SeneGence offers a 12-month money-back guarantee to all retail orders.

If a retail customer is dissatisfied with any SeneGence product for any reason, they may return that product to the Distributor from whom it was purchased, within twelve (12) months from the date of purchase, for either a replacement or a full refund of the purchased price.

Research shows that money-back guarantees and refunds increase customers’ feelings of satisfaction with their purchases.

In addition, people are much more likely to buy products that have a money-back guarantee as well as purchase from the same seller that offered it in the future.

If leveraged the right way, SeneGence’s money-back guarantee could have a rather positive impact on your retail sales.

4 • BBB A+ Rating

BBB (Better Business Bureau) is a non-profit organization that ranks businesses, charities, and non-profit organizations based on several factors, such as

  • Legitimacy
  • Information gathered online
  • Complaints received from customers
  • Complaints solved by the company
  • etc

SeneGence has been rated with A+ by BBB which is actually the highest possible BBB rating.

While BBB is not an official business evaluator but rather an independent organization, the higher the BBB rating a company receives, the more credible and trustworthy it is considered.

Please note that SeneGence’s high BBB rating isn’t definite proof neither that the company is indeed legit nor that it will help you achieve your financial goals.

SeneGence Cons

1 • It's Still an MLM

Despite all its pros, SeneGence is still an MLM.

And I am not at all fond of the MLM business model in general for many reasons…

First of all, the percentage of MLM participants who never actually make a profit is awfully high (74% – 99%).

In addition, the majority of those who do manage to make a profit, earn no more than $5000 per year.

Secondly, I hate selling and recruiting…

And thirdly, I’ve heard so many stories of people losing friends, family, and money due to the pushy and sleazy practices they were being taught by their “mentors” that I have become repulsed by the MLM business model in general.

Being involved in an MLM company is just not worth the trouble in my mind.

Especially when there exist other much more legit ways of building a substantial income without having to turn into a sleazy salesperson jeopardizing your relationships with those around you because you just can’t stop pitching them products they neither need nor want.

2 • Could be a Pyramid Scheme

SeneGence’s compensation plan definitely contains several instances that you would encounter in the compensation plan of a pyramid scheme…

This isn’t just my own opinion…

Many sources online, including Wikipedia, claim that SeneGence’s commission structure very closely resembles that of a pyramid scheme.

Pyramid schemes are extremely volatile and have very short expiration dates.

Once recruits start drying out, money stops flowing in, distributors stop getting paid and start jumping ship, and the scheme starts collapsing.

This is why pyramid schemes are an awful choice for those who are after building a long-term, sustainable income.

Even if they don’t collapse by themselves, when the attention of some regulatory authority such as the FTC falls upon them, they will eventually get shut down anyway.

According to the FTC, 99.6% of people recruited in a pyramid scheme will either never make money or lose money.

FTC goes on to state that all pyramid schemes are scams and that pyramid schemes usually disguise as legitimate MLM business opportunities, but those who end up becoming a part of a pyramid scheme usually lose family, friends, and substantial amounts of time and money.

3 • Complicated Compensation Plan

PV, various percentages of discounts, Downline Commissions Bonus, Group Sales Volume Bonus, 5 Lines deep, uni-level, personal orders to qualify for commissions, yadda yadda yadda.

Seriously, SeneGence’s compensation plan is a mess.

A person who is newly introduced to the MLM business model doesn’t stand a chance of really grasping how to leverage it to actually make money.

In fact, while conducting my research, I came across a comment of a person who called SeneGence’s comp plan “Unnecessarily complicated and complete trash”.

I couldn’t agree more!

This is no random occurrence though…

MLM companies make their compensation plans so complicated on purpose to “confuse” people into joining them due to something called “Complexity Bias”.

Complexity Bias and it’s the tendency of people to trust complex concepts more than simple ones.

Marketers use complexity bias all the time to boost the sales of a product/service by incorporating confusing language or insignificant details into its packaging or sales copy.

MLM companies do the exact same thing with their compensation plans to get more people to join them.

And no, I am not making things up…

You can read all about complexity bias right here.

4 • Expensive to Maintain

While joining SeneGence as a Distributor is pretty cheap at $55, in order to fully utilize the company’s compensation plan you’ll have to personally purchase up to $600 worth of products MONTHLY!

For instance, as mentioned earlier, in order to earn commissions on Lines 2 to 5 through the Group Sales Volume Bonus during any given month, you’ll have to personally purchase 300 PV (~$600) worth of products during that month.

If you don’t, you just won’t qualify for the bonus.

Such occurrences reflect a “Pay to Play” structure and are very common in SeneGence’s comp plan.

Pay to Play is one of the most prominent signs that a company operates as a pyramid scheme…

5 • No Income Disclosure Statement

I personally find the fact that SeneGence has been operating for 21 years and hasn’t released a single Income Disclosure Statement kinda unacceptable.

This lack of an IDS is an obvious sign that SeneGence tries to keep the extremely low income that its Distributors make under the radar in order for potential Distributors to not get discouraged from joining the company.

On the other hand, all Income Disclosure Statements I’ve come across until now reveal the exact same thing – that the vast majority of MLM reps never actually make any profit and those who do make a profit, would have to throw an additional couple of bucks on top of it to buy a pizza.

I know, you know, and the trees in my backyard know that if SeneGence published an IDS tomorrow it would tell the exact same story…

6 • Too Many Complaints

SeneGence International seems to have gathered quite a few complaints and negative reviews over the years.

Despite its A+ rating, SeneGence has more than 84 complaints under its BBB profile alone.

Taking into consideration the complaints and negative reviews found on SiteJabber and Reddit, the numbers actually add up to hundreds ranging from the inability to reach the company’s customer service for months at a time to being lied about refunds, etc.

What’s even more alarming is that the vast majority of complaints and negative reviews are regarding the company’s products and how they

  • Are constantly out of stock
  • Take months to get delivered
  • Cause allergic reactions and chemical burns after a few uses
  • Don’t work as advertised
  • Are defective
  • Are packaged poorly
  • Don’t worth their money
  • etc

Take a look at some of the aforementioned complaints right below.

In the video right below, this girl explains how several issues she came across as a Distributor for SeneGence left her no choice but to leave the company so make sure to watch it before moving any further in order to understand what you might be getting yourself into.

Is SeneGence International Suggested?

Truthfully, joining SeneGence International isn’t really suggested…

First of all, the fact that SeneGence requires you to personally purchase hundreds of dollars of worth of its products per month in order to qualify for all of its team bonuses indicates Pay to Play…

Pay to Play basically means that the more money you invest in SeneGence, the higher your income potential could be.

This is one of the most prominent signs of an MLM operating as a pyramid scheme.

That being said, if you want to fully utilize SeneGence’s MLM compensation plan and actually earn commissions not just through your own retail sales but also through the retail sales of the Distributors on multiple levels below you, you’ll need to spend $200 – $600 per month on SeneGence’s products.

That’s waaaaaay too much money to invest in a business model with such a low profitability rate…

Something else that struck me about SeneGence is that it calls its distributors “SeneSisters”.

This oh-so-cute nickname is typical MLM misleading stuff.

SeneGence calls its Distributors SeneSisters to make them feel special, that they are part of some significant, world-changing cause bigger than themselves as well as part of a big family that’s there to support and help them… After all, they are all sisters, yay!

Just so you know, most MLMs tend to give their reps cute nicknames like that to make them feel more important, something that usually encourages them to stick around and invest even more money and time in the company.

Furthermore, SeneGence International is operating for 21 years and it has not published a single Income Disclosure Statement.

Chances are that this is the case because the vast majority of SeneSisters is generating so little revenue that if made public, potential SeneSisters would never actually bother to join the company.

Lastly, after reading hundreds of complaints about SeneGence’s products, it seems that most of them could be potentially harmful in one way or another. After using SeneGence’s products, people have reported extreme skin allergies, boils, skin burns, dry skin, irritation, etc.

I don’t know about you, but I definitely wouldn’t want to be the person who sold a product that damaged the health of another human being in any way.

Would you really want to invest your time and money in such a “business opportunity”?

If so, then well, you have my blessing!

If not, make sure to check out a better money-making opportunity right here.
